This kit brings together 3 products to prepare homemade bissap the Senegalese way: dried hibiscus flowers, dried sweet mint and cane sugar. All that is missing is water, which you add yourself.
What does this kit contain?
- Whole red bissap TANTIE, 100 g pouch: 100% dried hibiscus flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa), for infusion.
- Sweet mint pieces SAMIA, 50 g pouch: 100% dried and crushed spearmint, to flavour the drink.
- Cane sugar LE GALION, 1 kg pack: crystallised brown sugar, produced in Martinique, to sweeten to taste.
What is bissap?
Bissap is the Wolof name for the red hibiscus flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa) and for the red, tangy drink made from it. In Senegal, it accompanies major occasions: baptisms, weddings, religious celebrations such as Tabaski or Korité. Offering a glass of fresh bissap to a guest is part of the customs of hospitality. It is traditionally flavoured with mint, orange blossom or vanilla. The full guide is on the blog: homemade hibiscus drink recipes.
How to prepare bissap with this kit?
- Rinse 50 g of hibiscus flowers in cold water (half of the TANTIE pouch).
- Bring 1 litre of water to the boil, pour it over the flowers and let it steep for 20 minutes, up to 2 hours for a stronger taste.
- Strain, then sweeten while hot with 75 to 100 g of cane sugar LE GALION.
- Add a pinch of sweet mint SAMIA to taste, let it cool then refrigerate.
- Serve very cold, with ice cubes if you like.
You provide the water yourself and, if needed, ice cubes: everything else is in the kit. For a stronger juice, go up to 100 g of flowers per litre.
What to pair it with?
To vary the flavours, this kit pairs well with orange blossom flavouring SAMIA. To compare other bissap formats, the hibiscus and bissap discovery kit brings together flowers, pouches and instant granules. The whole range: bissap and hibiscus flowers.
