The white hibiscus flower NUMBER ONE is a whole dried calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa, the same plant as classic red bissap, but a paler variety. Infused, it gives a drink that is milder and less acidic than red bissap. 100 g bag.
What is white hibiscus?
White hibiscus is a variety of Hibiscus sabdariffa with pale calyces, sometimes called "var. albus", to be distinguished from the red variety rich in anthocyanins, the pigments responsible for its purple colour. Depending on the country, the drink prepared with its dried flowers is called bissap (Senegal and West Africa), karkadé or carcadet (Egypt, Maghreb), sorrel (English-speaking Caribbean) or zobo (Nigeria).
How to prepare it?
Infuse about 15 to 20 g of dried flowers, roughly a good handful, in a litre of boiling water for 10 minutes, then strain. Sweeten to taste and flavour with fresh mint, grated ginger, vanilla or orange blossom. Serve hot in winter or well chilled with ice cubes in summer.
What to pair it with?
To compare with the classic version, NKOSI also offers whole red bissap TANTIE. Find other flowers and herbal teas in the Bissap and Hibiscus Flowers section, and a step-by-step recipe on the homemade bissap guide. In the same section: organic white hibiscus infusion RACINES.
