Selecto is the brown soda from the Algerian house Hamoud Boualem, created in 1907. Its apple and caramel taste is unlike a cola or a lemonade: it is the drink of family meals and celebrations for many Algerians, in Algeria as in France. 1.5 L bottle.
What is Selecto?
A flavoured sparkling drink, with no fruit juice, dark brown in colour. Hamoud Boualem, which launched it in 1907 under the name “Victoria”, describes it as a blend of apple and caramel flavours. The bottle sold in France carries the wording “Produced under licence from Hamoud Boualem SPA, Algeria”: the recipe is Algerian, the bottling is done under licence.
How to serve it?
Well chilled, with or without ice cubes. It is drunk at the table, with a couscous, grilled meats or a platter of pastries, and is easy to share thanks to its large size. Once opened, keep the bottle tightly closed in the refrigerator to keep the bubbles.
What to pair it with?
The HAMOUD La Blanche lemonade comes from the same house, lemon-flavoured and with no colouring. To vary the colours on the table, the IFRI Raspberry Gazouz. The recipe for chicken couscous is on the blog, and all drinks are in the drinks section.
