GOYA red kidney beans (habichuelas coloradas) are a pulse that is already cooked and preserved in water and salt, ready to heat up in a few minutes. 439 g tin, 250 g drained.
What is the GOYA red kidney bean?
The kidney-type red bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is called habichuela colorada or habichuela roja in Dominican Spanish, red kidney bean in English, and pwa wouj in Antillean and Haitian Creole. This GOYA tin, from the Dominican Republic, contains only red beans, water, salt and a firming agent (E509, calcium chloride) that keeps their shape during industrial cooking. Unlike the black bean in the same range, it needs no soaking: it is already cooked, with a tender, soft texture.
How to use it?
Drain and rinse the beans, then simmer them with onion, garlic and a little oil. In the Dominican Republic, together with white rice and stewed meat they make up “La Bandera Dominicana”, the national dish eaten almost daily. In Cape Verde, cachupa (a maize and bean stew) combines red and white beans, crushed maize, cassava and sweet potato. In the French Antilles, they are found in rice and red beans; in Mexico, in chili con carne.
What to pair it with?
For a complete rice and red beans dish, pair this product with LOTUS fragrant Thai rice, or vary it with GOYA black beans. The Cape Verdean cachupa recipe details a traditional use. Find other pulses in the Caribbean & West Indies Flavours selection. In the same aisle: Ya Goma NUMBER ONE bean.
