GLENRYCK Pilchard sardines in tomato sauce are large canned Atlantic pilchards (Sardina pilchardus), coated in a tomato sauce, in a 425 g tin. According to the label, the sauce is made of tomato paste, cassava starch and guar gum, with no added oil or artificial additive.
What is a pilchard?
Pilchard is the English name given to the adult sardine (Sardina pilchardus), the same species as the European sardine but caught at a more advanced stage, hence a firmer flesh and more generous tins. GLENRYCK, a South African brand founded in 1937, states on this tin a catch in FAO zone 34 (Eastern Central Atlantic), by seine net.
How to use them?
Warm them gently in a pan and serve them with rice, cassava foufou or plantain. In South Africa, canned pilchards traditionally go with pap (maize porridge) or are eaten as they are, on a slice of bread. To liven up the sauce, add a sautéed onion, garlic and a little chilli at the end of cooking.
What to pair them with?
The catalogue also offers the spicy version: GLENRYCK pilchards in spicy tomato sauce. Discover the other canned fish in the catalogue, and HOUSE OF SPICED onion granules to season the sauce. In the same section: ANNY sardines in oil.
